Flower Fairy Birthday Cake

First birthdays are really special and very exciting times for everyone except the little baby who doesn't even know that she is on the way to becoming a child now. This little girl is the happiest of babies and a really adorable little angel. She was quite fussed with on her first birthday but didn't really cry more than once just enjoyed playing with the other children around.  Here is a flower fairy birthday cake for an adorable little fairy on her mum's request.

I found this really effective tutorial for a fondant flower fairy, click here to view it. It is very well explained and very clear. I am so thankful to so many talented bakers and cake decorators for posting such easy to understand and follow instructions, just makes it so much easier to make. I must say that my flower fairy is not quite the same as the tutorial but it is quite cute don't you think?

Happy Birthday Aashna and keep smiling always our adorable little fairy!

Arctic Sensory Box

Another one of E's favourite activities, the sensory box! I have been making different sensory boxes for her since E was a year old and she just loves them.It is like a big treasure bag where she can see all her treasure at the same time explore it. Click here for some from my earlier post. E bought heaps of animal toys from her visits to the zoo recently and one of them was a tube full of animals from the snow. So I made this sensory box for her with penguin and friends in lots of snow.

I used some snowy landscape print outs and added them to the walls of the box. To make the snow combine plain flour with olive oil and smooth out all the lumps. Roughly I combined 3 cups of flour with 1/2 cup of olive oil and then mixed them well to form a very soft mix. The igloo is made from sugar cubes.
I didn't have any blue pebbles for the water so I used some blue fabric strips, blue pebbles would be better as the fabric got really dirty with the flour.

Polar Bear is E's favourite she calls it "Po bear" so despite being from the other ends of tehw orld I had to put polar bear together with the penguins!

Once E started exploring the snow nothing looked the way I had arranged it initially but she does play with it and uses the sugar cubes as blocks to build her own igloo.

A Very Cozy Red Riding Hood

E is a very active toddler and loves to play outdoors. I wanted to make her very warm but comfortable clothes that she can wear during her play outdoors. So I have made a few jackets for her and they were really as the size was so petite! This one is for my little red riding hood, as it's red and she wears them on her very comfy riding pants that I made for her previously

I used shearling fabric as the lining for this cotton jacket. It is a kimono style jacket with front tabs for fastening. I used self fabric buttons for the tabs and rolled the sleeves such that the shearling wool shows out on the front.
E loves this jacket so much that she shows it off to other parents quoting "jacket mummy made" :)

Winter Wonder Tunic

I am getting so confident with my sewing that I have been sewing practically everyday last month trying to create a very practical yet gorgeous wardrobe for E. It feels good when I dress E up to go out everyday as now she wears at least one piece of clothing made by me everyday. Best of all E pretends play sewing and she makes dresses and jackets for me and every time I sew something she wants to try it on even before it's finished! Above all sales at fabric stores are such a blessing, but I did go a bit crazy and now I have more fabric than I can manage to stitch given a very active toddler in the house!

I do love flowers on dresses for little girls but I do want them to look a bit more subtle and elegant. It was very simple to put this flower together. I stitched all the petals individually first and the arranged them together on the dress, hand sew and added a wooden button in the centre.

I made this pattern myself using a very basic bodice block with an A-line skirt for the dress. The cotton fabric  I used, was a bit thin for the style so I have lined the dress with the same fabric used for the top. It does give it a structured look that I intended.

I love the winter colours on these printed fabrics and the so very animated E posing for mum xx

Superman on a Dinosaur Birthday cake!

Children have such imagination that it is a delight to hear what they dream of sometimes. This little monster loves dinosaurs and he dreams of a superman sitting on a dinosaur almost every night so for his birthday this is what mum wanted on his cake! Really creative, he always has such interesting stories to tell that it doesn't take him long to build an audience. I am so grateful to all the mums and dads for posting such a amazing tutorials on the web that it makes it so simple to make almost anything these days. So here is what I made for a very creative little fella's fourth birthday.

Here is where I found the link tutorial for this cake. It was easier than it looks trust me! Since Evaan had two parties for his birthday, lucky boy, I made another one without any dinosaurs just superman in a city backdrop, which I thought looked more like a batman backdrop but it did do the trick.

Birthday boy sliced the superman in half right in the centre, I think that would be another one of his very creative dreams xx
